Lightly tanned hands wiped sweat from the forehead of the youthful 15 year old as he did his daily laps around the athletic field. His favorite time of the day was the morning. He absolutely loved how crisp it felt and how cool the weather was compared to the afternoon. He frowned as the bells went off in the school building, signaling first period. He sighed and headed back towards his dormitory. That was his signal to go get into the school uniform and out of his sweat-soaked tank top and shorts. He stopped in his tracks and decided to slump against a tree far away enough from the school where nobody would see him, but close enough to the field where he could see the soccer field. He always thought against this large tree, but usually with his uniform on.
He didn’t really know what got into him that morning, but he just didn’t feel like himself. Maybe he had exhausted himself from the exercise this earlier, or maybe it was just that he’d gone to sleep late last night reading one of his old textbooks from elementary. Either way, he fell asleep against the lone oak tree in the athletic field.
For some reason, he felt more comfortable up against that tree than the beds in the dormitories. He felt at peace, even though he was missing his classes. But honestly, people really didn’t expect him to show up most of the time by now. He didn’t even expect himself to show up half the time. It was a sad, yet honest truth. He barely believed in himself even after so many times he’d said to the mirror that he was a different person. And then he went and started a fight with another bully or whatever within the next week.
But instead of thinking about his past, he dreamed. A world full of happiness. A world quite different from the one that Asher resided in. In his perfect world, his mother and father were married, and his sister smiled more and looked him in the eye. In his perfect world, he smiled back.
But as soon as the world appeared in his head, it vanished as the bell for dismissal rang in his ear. He drowsily stood up and looked around at his surroundings. His eyes widened as he completely woke up. He’d slept through the whole day! Students were coming out of the doorways and the athletic practices were starting up. He was still decked in his tank top and shorts. He wanted to run for the dormitory, but he really didn’t. He just slumped back down and wished for his dream world to have been a reality.
